2nd suspect arrested in 2024 shooting death of 13-year-old boy in Santa Ana

SANTA ANA — Santa Ana police have arrested a second suspect in a 2024 shooting that left a 13-year-old boy dead, authorities announced Tuesday.

On June 5, 2024, the Santa Ana Police Department responded to a shooting near 900 W. Bishop St., where they found a 13-year-old and a 16-year-old boy suffering from gunshot wounds.

A third juvenile victim, also 13, was found nearby but was unharmed, police said. The first 13-year-old victim, Daniel Vargas, later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

Two days later, homicide detectives identified the suspect as 27-year-old Raymond Mario Jimenez of Santa Ana. He was arrested and booked into the Santa Ana Jail on suspicion of murder, attempted murder, and shooting into an inhabited dwelling.

Police said homicide detectives continued their investigation and identified 18-year-old Michael Richard Jimenez of Santa Ana as an additional suspect.

On April 24, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service, detectives located Michael Jimenez in Riverside, and he was arrested and booked on suspicion of attempted murder.

His relation to Raymond Mario Jimenez, if any, was not specified by police.

The case is eligible for the Gang Reward Program.
