California couple ran man down with their truck, pepper sprayed him while pinned under wheel: sheriff

A man and a woman were arrested in San Bernardino County Monday evening after they allegedly ran down a man with their pickup truck and then sprayed him with tear gas while he was pinned under a wheel of the vehicle.

It happened around 11:25 p.m. on the 20000 block of Tussing Ranch Road in Apple Valley, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff’s officials say 36-year-old David Schaar and 38-year-old Jacqueline Chapman ran down the victim as he was walking near their home.

“The suspects chased the victim in a pickup truck,” the Sheriff’s Department said in a news release. “The victim was struck and run over several times by the vehicle and became pinned beneath a tire.”

After he became wedged between the ground and the tire, Schaar and Chapman exited the truck and allegedly began spraying tear gas in the injured man’s face.

Deputies arrived on scene to find the victim suffering from serious injuries; he was transported to a local hospital by ambulance.

Chapman and Schaar were arrested on the scene and taken to the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto where they await charges for assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful use of tear gas.

Officials did not disclose the current condition of the victim, nor have they shed any light on a potential motive for the crime.
