Orange Lutheran’s girls flag football team defeated Dos Pueblos 23-21 in triple overtime to capture the Chargers Invitational at Beckman High on Saturday night.

The Lancers (6-0), ranked No. 1 in Orange County, and Dos Pueblos (6-1) went to overtime tied 20-20.

In overtime, the teams alternated with extra-point attempts.

In the first round, Orange Lutheran took a 21-20 lead on a catch by wide receiver Josie Anderson from quarterback Makena Cook. Dos Pueblos converted its 1-point play to force another tie.

After both teams failed to convert in the second round, the Lancers claimed their second consecutive title at the Chargers’ event on a 2-point conversion reception by freshman wide receiver Happy Dubois from Cook.

“(Dos Pueblos is) a very, very good team and they are very well coached but I’m glad we were able to make a few adjustments and perform better in the second half,” Orange Lutheran coach Kristen Sherman said.

“We didn’t play very good fundamental football in the first half. We didn’t do our job defensively and they capitalized, and we made some mistakes on offense.”

The championship game was by far the toughest test for Orange Lutheran at the tournament.

The Lancers opened on Friday by beating Warren 32-6 and Western Christian 12-0 to win their pool.

On Saturday, Orange Lutheran handled Aliso Niguel 26-0 in the quarterfinals and Mater Dei 34-7 in the semifinals.

The Lancers entered the championship game having outscored their season opponents 137-13.
