Girls flag football: Orange Lutheran, Newport Harbor continue to lead

The Orange County girls flag football rankings as of Monday, Aug. 25.

GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL

Rank, school, record, previous rank

1. Orange Lutheran 8-0 (1): Makena Cook has passed for 1,780 yards and 24 TDs. The Lancers play at Beckman and Esperanza on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

2. Newport Harbor 6-0 (2): Skylie Cid and Scarlett Guyser earned co-MVP honors as the Sailors defeated Esperanza 12-7 to win the Turf Division at the JSerra tournament.

3. JSerra 7-0 (4): GG Szczuka, who is committed to SMU for soccer, has 20 receptions for 233 yards and six TDs. The Lions claimed the Surf Division at their tournament on Saturday.

4. Huntington Beach 2-0 (3): Roxie Shaia has thrown for 467 yards and seven touchdowns in two games.

5. Santa Margarita 4-0 (6): Madi Lam has completed 74 percent of her passes for 819 yards and 13 TDs.

6. Canyon 8-1 (5): Senior Katy Cott has been a breakout performer with 46 receptions for 534 yards.

7. Esperanza 9-2 (not ranked): The Aztecs last week reached the final of the Turf Division at the JSerra tournament and avenged a loss to Mater Dei.

8. Mater Dei 5-3 (10): The Monarchs play Cajon, Beckman and Trabuco Hills consecutively starting on Tuesday.

9. Northwood 0-2 (7): The Timberwolves open Pacific Coast League play this week after dropping games to Newport Harbor and JSerra.

10. Aliso Niguel 4-3 (not ranked): Sophomore Paige Russell passed for 210 yards and two TDs to rally the Wolverines past Corona del Mar 26-18.
