Dozens of Californians sickened by recalled eggs

Dozens of Californians have contracted salmonella by consuming recalled eggs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

At least 95 people in 14 states have been sickened in the outbreak, including 18 who’ve been hospitalized. CDCR officials said California accounts for the vast majority of those affected, with 73 people sickened.

The product at the center of the outbreak is Large Brown Cage Free “Sunshine Yolks” eggs from Country Eggs, LLC, which is located in San Bernardino County. The egg products were officially recalled by the company on Wednesday.

Egg products that are the subject of a recall are shown in this photo from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Those who have purchased the eggs are urged to throw them out or return them to where they were purchased. Do not eat, sell or serve them, CDCR urges.

If you’ve already purchased and cracked open some of the affected eggs, you should disinfect any wash items or surfaces that came in contact with them.

You should contact your health care provider if you develop any severe symptoms of salmonella, which includes a high fever, diarrhea that lasts several days, bloody stool, vomiting and dehydration. The illness usually lasts four to seven days, and most people recover without treatment.

Children and the elderly, as well as people with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop serious symptoms.

Businesses are urged not to sell or serve any recalled eggs and immediately wash and sanitized any surfaces that may have come in contact with them.
