The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert Friday for Trader Joe’s frozen, not-ready-to-eat uncured pepperoni pizza imported from Italy since it didn’t undergo the required import reinspection.
Officials said a recall was not requested because the product is no longer available for purchase.
The product under the alert is a 17.63-ounce “TRADER JOE’S UNCURED PEPPERONI PIZZA PRODUCT OF ITALY” in a cardboard box. Packages affected include those with lot and date codes “MFG LOT: 06/16/25 BEST BY: 08/16/26” or “MFG LOT: 06/21/25 BEST BY 08/21/26,” printed on the bottom of the package.
The pizzas bear the Italian establishment number “IT 1558 L UE” inside the Italian mark of inspection on the front of the box and were shipped to retail locations in California.
The issue was identified after Trader Joe’s notified FSIS that the frozen pizza was not presented for inspection upon import. No illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported in connection with the product, according to a news release.
FSIS warned that some pizzas may remain in consumers’ freezers. Customers who have purchased the product should not eat it and are advised to discard it or return it to the store. Anyone concerned about a potential illness should consult a health care provider.
