Ryan Hopkins threw a 37-yard touchdown to Chris Henry Jr. in the middle of the fourth quarter as Mater Dei’s football team defeated host Bishop Gorman of Nevada 27-24 on Friday to bounce back from a stinging loss.

Coming off a mistake-filled 43-36 loss at Centennial last week, Mater Dei (4-1) took a 27-24 lead with 6:08 left in regulation as Henry — an Ohio State committed wide receiver — leaped between two defenders for the catch and dove into the end zone.

Henry added to his string of highlight receptions this fall and helped Mater Dei rebound after it committed seven turnovers against Centennial. The loss snapped the Monarchs’ 21-gane winning streak on the field.

Mater Dei, ranked No. 8 in the nation by MaxPreps, improved to 5-0 in its series against No. 2 Bishop Gorman (4-1).

The Monarchs entered the national showdown aiming for improvements and progressed in incorporating USC committed tight end Mark Bowman into the offense. Bowman caught his first two touchdowns of the season.
