Football roundup: Tesoro, Huntington Beach, Dana Hills win in Week 6

Nic Brubaker ran for 141 yards with two touchdowns for Tesoro in a 17-14 win over Newport Harbor in its Bravo League opener Friday at Tesoro High.

Brubaker scored the go-ahead touchdown with eight minutes left in the game. Kenneth Smith-Brown had an interception for Tesoro (3-3, 1-0) in the final minute to seal the game.

Wyatt Owens and Zach Claton had sacks for the Titans and Shady Yowkeem made a field goal as time expired in the first half.

Jake Meer and Glenn Baranoski had rushing touchdowns for Newport Harbor (2-4, 0-1). Meer threw for 148 yards and ran for 62.

Tesoro hosts Villa Park Friday, Oct. 10 in a Bravo League game. Newport Harbor plays crosstown rival Corona del Mar Saturday, Oct. 11 in the Battle of the Bay at Orange Coast College.

In the Trinity League:

St. John Bosco 70, JSerra 21: Gino Wang ran for a touchdown and threw a long touchdown pass for JSerra in a home loss to St. John Bosco.

Clark Cokley had a touchdown reception for JSerra (3-3, 0-1) and Koa Smith-Mayall ran for a touchdown. JSerra plays Servite next Friday.

In the Epsilon League:

Huntington Beach 65, Laguna Hills 10: Troy Foster caught nine passes for 245 yards with five touchdowns in Huntington Beach’s rout of Laguna Hills.

Brady Edmunds completed 22 of 24 passes for 381 yards with seven touchdowns. Steel Kurtz had two touchdown receptions for Huntington Beach (5-1, 1-0). Sophomores Nathan Santillan and Nathan Villanueva each had rushing touchdowns for the Oilers.

Kurtz led Huntington Beach’s defense with eight tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble.

In the Foxtrot League: 

Dana Hills 35, Aliso Niguel 14: Jack Norman caught six passes for 141 yards with two touchdowns for Dana Hills in a win over Aliso Niguel.

Carter Anderson threw for 256 yards with two touchdowns for Dana Hills (6-0, 1-0). Radley Geiss ran for 84 yards with two touchdowns in his first game back since week three.

Micah Langohr had 3.5 sacks for the Dolphins. Norman and Stephen Reda had interceptions.

Carter Vestermark threw two touchdown passes for Aliso Niguel (4-2, 0-1). Artin Hatamabad and Logan Wagner had interceptions for the Wolverines.

Laguna Beach 42, Northwood 0: Jack Hurst threw for 254 yards with five touchdowns for Laguna Beach in a blowout win over Northwood.

Brady Stringham caught two passes for 128 yards with two touchdowns for Laguna Beach (6-0, 1-0). Charlie Christian and Otis Boultinghouse had touchdown receptions for the Breakers and Grant Regal had an interception.

In the Kappa League:

Segerstrom 27, St. Margaret’s 14: Segerstrom ran for four touchdowns and scored 21 points in the first quarter.

Ayden Morales had two rushing touchdowns for Segerstrom (4-2, 1-0). Louis Garcia and Noah Martinez also had rushing touchdowns.

Kai Letcher threw two touchdown passes to Jack Kleinhanzl for St. Margaret’s (3-3, 0-1).

Esperanza 58, Garden Grove 33: Travis Frazier completed 20 of 26 passes for 450 yards and two touchdowns for Esperanza.

Frazier also ran for a touchdown. Brody Snyder ran for 91 yards with three touchdowns and Joseph Fields had two rushing touchdowns for Esperanza (3-3, 1-0). Eddie Matthews had 138 yards receiving and Snyder added 110 with a touchdown.

Quentin Pacelli ran for 305 yards with two touchdowns for Garden Grove (2-4, 0-1). Calvin Keovphan threw for 190 yards with two touchdowns.

In the Omicron League:

Pacifica 42, University 6: Pacifica scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to pull away from University.

James Anema completed 16 of 22 passes for 227 yards with three touchdowns for Pacifica (3-3, 1-0). Max Salas had two touchdown receptions and Davin Carlsson had over 100 yards receiving with a touchdown.

Ma’Kai Brown and Xander Schmidt had touchdown runs for the Mariners. Gabe Frias returned an interception for a touchdown.

Dylan Elmer threw a touchdown pass to Cruz McMullens for University (2-4, 0-1). Cruz McMullens had over 200 yards receiving.

Portola 17, Woodbridge 7: Orion Suttle threw a touchdown pass and ran for a touchdown for Portola (3-3, 1-0).

Subtle threw for 119 yards and ran for 39. Jamal Abdelkarin had 95 yards receiving with a touchdown for Portola.

Waylan Stone ran for a touchdown for Woodbridge (0-6, 0-1).

In the Sigma League:

Estancia 25, Rancho Alamitos 17: Jeff Brown ran for 150 yards for Estancia with two touchdowns in a win over Rancho Alamitos.

Rancho Alamitos (3-3, 0-1) scored late in the fourth quarter to cut Estancia’s lead to 19-17. In the final minute, Brandon Bettinghausen intercepted a pass for Estancia (5-1, 1-0) and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown to seal the game.

Estancia had five interceptions and two forced fumbles. Bettinghausen and Sean Sweeney had two interceptions while Gabe Johner added one.

Calvary Chapel 42, Santa Ana Valley 14: Colin Wiles threw for 228 yards with four touchdowns for Calvary Chapel.

Calvary Chapel (6-0, 1-0) scored 22 points in the second quarter.

In the Iota League:

Troy 42, Sonora 9: The Warriors (5-1, 1-0) raced to a 28-3 lead at halftime at Fullerton High and collected a third consecutive victory.

Jordan Williams rushed four times for 80 yards and one score, and David Fujimoto added 61 yards and one touchdown on six carries to pace Troy.

Roy Bouakar had eight total tackles, including two for loss, to anchor the Warriors’ defense.

Troy played without standout Ethan Mundt due to injury, Warriors coach Michael Echaves said.

El Toro 27, Canyon 17: Wyatt Nucci completed 26 of 34 passes for 239 yards and a touchdown, and Makya Chee rushed for 121 yards and two scores, as the host Chargers (3-3, 1-0) rebounded from a loss against Aliso Niguel.

Nucci’s top target was Bryce Thacker, who had 11 catches for 115 yards.

Seniors Henry Stevenson (12 tackles), Malachi Mena (10) and Devon Costic (10) each recorded double digit tackles for El Toro’s defense, which held Canyon (2-4, 0-1) to a season-low output.

Irvine 43, Santa Ana 7: Sina Saferzadeh threw three touchdowns and rushed for another as the host Vaqueros (5-1, 1-0) sprinted to a fourth consecutive victory.

Saferzadeh and Chad Russom recorded interceptions to help lead Irvine’s defense, which has allowed 64 points (10.6 points per game).

The Vaqueros also scored on special teams. Cole Riedel blocked a punt that Cameron Galatioto recovered and returned for a touchdown.

In the Lambda League:

Beckman 34, Fullerton 14: The Patriots (3-3, 1-0) won at Tustin High to even their overall record and set up an intriguing game next week against surprising Sunny Hills (5-1, 1-0).

Kennedy 14, Valencia 7: Sophomore Jacob Pineda scored on a 10-yard run with 3:30 left in the fourth quarter to lift the Fighting Irish (4-2, 1-0) past the Tigers (1-5, 0-1) at Valencia High.

In the Tango League:

Anaheim 54, Loara 21: The Colonists (3-3, 1-0) shutout the Saxons (1-5, 0-1) in the second half at Glover Stadium as they opened defense of their Tango League title.

Anaheim led 34-21 at halftime and improve to 6-0 in the league since it formed last season.

Xavier Aviles had three catches for 94 yards and three TDs, and also threw for a score to lead the Colonists.

Bolsa Grande 14, La Quinta 7: Jesse Hernandez recorded a key sack late in the fourth quarter as the host Matadors (3-3, 1-0) beat the Aztecs (3-2-1, 0-1) for the fourth consecutive season.
