DMV offers extended hours ahead of REAL ID deadline

Starting Monday, some Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices around Southern California will open an hour earlier to help people get their REAL ID ahead of the May 7 deadline.

Many are still in need of the updated ID despite multiple deadline extensions over the past several years. A REAL ID will be needed to fly domestically otherwise, a passport will be required.

To help with the upgrade process, 18 DMV locations around the Southland will offer extended hours between April 14 and June 27 by opening earlier at 7 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, according to the DMV. There will be no extended hours on Wednesdays.

The following DMV locations will offer the extended hours (SoCal locations are in bold):

  • Pleasanton at 6300 W. Las Positas Blvd.
  • Fremont at 4287 Central Ave.
  • Folsom at 323 E. Bidwell St., Suite A
  • Carmichael at 5209 North Ave.
  • Thousand Oaks at 1810 E. Avenida De Los Arboles
  • Van Nuys at 14920 Vanowen St.

Californians can apply for a REAL ID online at REALID.dmv.ca.gov but still need to go to a DMV office in person to complete the process. Applicants need to provide a valid passport or birth certificate, a social security number and proof of California residency such as a bank statement or utility bill, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The DMV does charge a $45 fee for the REAL ID.

Those who already possess a current passport or other federal-approved document can wait until their driver’s license is due for renewal.
