All aboard! Metrolink’s annual holiday train returns for 2025

Metrolink’s annual Holiday Express train is set to return for the 2025 winter season.

The special ticketed holiday train rides will begin in December with family activities, character visits and a 75-minute round-trip ride. It’s a seasonal draw the passenger rail agency says helps connect communities during the holidays.

Special designated trains will have festive interiors, and each host station will have receptions with themed activities, music and treats before departure. The train rides also feature appearances by Santa and Mrs. Claus, as well as other costumed helpers.

Importantly, the agency is again partnering with local nonprofits to collect toys at each stop to support families in need.

“There’s something truly magical about Metrolink’s Holiday Express trains that capture what this time of year is all about,” Riverside County Supervisor and Metrolink board member Karen Spiegel said. “This heartwarming experience enriches our local communities and creates memories that last long after the season ends.”

Trains will depart from five stations over three weekends, including visits to Union Station and San Bernardino on the weekend of Dec. 6, Irvine on Dec. 13 and 14, Riverside on Dec. 20, then Simi Valley on Dec. 21, according to Metrolink.

Standard assigned seats cost $30, premium seats with a tabletop cost $35, and a limited number of interior-facing single seats are $25. Children 2 and younger ride free on an adult’s lap.

Passengers can bring snacks and non-alcoholic drinks on board, but strollers should be left in vehicles.

Metrolink says riders should arrive early for parking and check-in to allow time for pre-boarding festivities.

“When aboard Metrolink’s Holiday Express, the journey itself becomes the destination, and it’s a celebration,” Metrolink board member Tâm Nguyễn said. “It’s a wonderful example of how Metrolink connects our region, not just through rail service, but through shared experiences that bring people together.”
