71-year-old pedestrian from La Verne killed in hit-and-run in Dana Point

A 71-year-old man died after he was struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run crash in Dana Point on Friday, Nov. 7, authorities said Saturday.

Deputies responded around noon to reports of a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian near Pacific Coast Highway and Dana Point Harbor Drive, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said.

They found a pedestrian, identified as Barry William Tutt of La Verne, suffering from severe injuries. Tutt was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Witnesses told deputies a silver Ford sedan struck Tutt and then fled the scene, the department said. With their assistance, deputies located the driver, identified as 57-year-old Humberto Munoz Gatica of Laguna Niguel.

He was arrested and booked into Orange County Jail on suspicion of DUI and charges related to the hit-and-run.

The Sheriff’s Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating the collision. Anyone with information was asked to contact the department’s Traffic Bureau at 949-425-1860, or provide anonymous tips through Orange County Crime Stoppers at 1-855-TIP-OCCS.
