Orange County boys basketball Top 25: Santa Margarita hangs on at No. 1

The Orange County boys basketball rankings as of Monday, Jan. 19. The team records are through Sunday, Jan. 18.

Notable this week: Rodney Westmoreland preserved Santa Margarita’s hold on the No. 1 position in the rankings with his buzzer-beating, 3-point basket in a 70-67 win over JSerra. … Los Alamitos had a great week, so the Griffins rise in the rankings. … Servite beat La Habra, 71-65, and lost to Orange Lutheran, 84-73, so the Friars stay at No. 12 and Orange Lutheran remains at No. 11. … Newport Harbor and Marina trade places in the Top 25 after the Sailors defeated the Vikings, 61-54, in the Sunset League.

BOYS BASKETBALL TOP 25

1. Santa Margarita 21-3: The Eagles cruised to an 80-43 win over Mayfair in a nonleague game, then beat JSerra 70-67 in a dramatic Trinity League game when Rodney Westmoreland made a running 3-point bank shot at the buzzer.

2. Crean Lutheran 17-6: The Saints defeated Foothill 57-45 in a Crestview League game and beat Fairmont Prep 51-41 in a nonleague game.

3. JSerra 14-10: The Lions went 0-2 last week against two outstanding teams. They lost 70-67 to Santa Margarita and 82-53 to Redondo Union.

4. Corona del Mar 21-1: The Sea Kings are 6-0 in the Sunset League after last week’s 70-46 win over Edison. In that game, the Sea Kings raced to a 28-0 lead.

5. Los Alamitos 13-7: The Griffins won four games last week, including Sunset League victories over Edison, Newport Harbor and Fountain Valley. They also had a nonleague win 73-70 over St. Francis, the No. 5 team in the CIF Southern Section rankings.

6. Mater Dei 14-9: The Monarchs went 0-2 last week, starting with an 85-64 loss to St. John Bosco. They also lost 72-57 to Notre Dame Prep of Connecticut in the Hoophall Classic in Massachusetts.

7. La Habra 18-6: The Highlanders lost at Servite 71-65 in a nonleague game, beat rival Sonora 61-54 in a nonleague game, and defeated Canyon 57-54 in a Crestview League game.

8. Canyon 14-9: The Comanches beat Cypress 66-62 in a Crestview League game, lost to La Habra 57-54 in league game and lost to Rancho Cucamonga 66-62 in a nonleague game.

9. Cypress 16-8: In two Crestview League games, the Centurions lost to Canyon 66-52 and beat Foothill 71-54.

10. Fairmont Prep 11-10: The Huskies beat Capistrano Valley Christian 50-37 in a San Joaquin League game and lost to Crean Lutheran 51-41 in a nonleague game.
