Chilean man gets 11 years in prison in San Gabriel Valley child exploitation case

A Chilean man who cajoled a 14-year-old girl he met online to send him pornographic pictures of herself and agree to have sex with him when he arrived in Los Angeles was sentenced on Monday, Feb. 2, to 11 years and three months behind bars.

Daniel Andres Aravena Oliva, 22, pleaded guilty in March 2025 in federal court to enticement of a minor to engage in criminal sexual activity and possession of child pornography.

Oliva admitted that from December 2023 to May 2024 he used video chats from Chile to persuade the San Gabriel Valley teenager to create child pornography of herself, which he then produced by taking screenshots of the calls on his phone, according to the government’s sentencing papers.

He also persuaded the girl to meet and have sex with him if he were to travel to Southern California. Prosecutors say he knew the girl was underage and that what he was doing was illegal.

Oliva threatened to expose the photos to the girl’s family if she did not do as he wished.

Oliva met the then-13-year-old victim on the online game Roblox, Glendora police said.

The two also communicated via Google Slides and Zoom, according to an affidavit from Paley Mao, special agent with Homeland Security Investigations. The victim’s mother and school officials notified police on or about April 9, 2024, Mao wrote.

Police served search warrants to Google, Zoom, and Roblox. The Gmail account and Roblox user names were traced to Santiago, Chile.

He also used FaceTime, according to court documents.

The school blocked Oliva’s email address and the victim’s mother confiscated her electronic devices, Mao wrote. Oliva then created burner emails to try and reach the teen.

He had told the victim he was going to stay at a place in La Verne to be close to her. Mao confirmed the address was an Airbnb and that Oliva had a reservation to stay there from Aug. 20, 2024, to Sept. 5, 2024.

When Oliva arrived at LAX on Aug. 20, 2024, he told Customs and Border Protection officers he didn’t know anyone in the U.S., was here on tourism, and that he was staying in La Verne, Mao wrote.

Mao asked to inspect his cellphone. Oliva gave him the password and signed a form agreeing to the search. In the deleted-photos folder, Mao found sexually explicit videos and photographs of the victim.

Authorities arrested Olivas.

During an interview with detectives, Oliva disclosed that he knew the victim was 14, that he came to the U.S. because he could no longer communicate with her, would have sex with her if she agreed, and admitted to sexual conduct with the teen via video calls, Mao wrote.

Oliva’s attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.
