Ray Fenton leaves Los Alamitos to become Orange Lutheran football coach

Ray Fenton is the new football coach at Orange Lutheran High School.

Fenton coached Los Alamitos to the CIF Southern Section Division 2 championship this past season, his 10th as the Griffins’ coach. He coached Cypress to a CIF-SS championship in 2007.

He replaces Rod Sherman, who was dismissed as Orange Lutheran’s coach after the 2025 season. The Lancers finished 3-9 overall and 1-4 in the Trinity League.

Fenton’s Los Alamitos record was 80-33.

Los Alamitos defeated San Clemente, 33-20, in the Division 2 championship game in November.

The Griffins finished third in the four-team Alpha League in 2025 with a 1-2 league record. They lost to Cathedral Catholic in a CIF Southern California Regional game after winning their CIF-SS Division 2 title.

He replaced John Barnes as the Los Alamitos coach after the 2015 season.

Fenton was the head coach at Fountain Valley for three seasons before taking the Los Alamitos position.

He has a history of rebuilding football programs. Cypress was 2-8 overall and 0-5 in Fenton’s first season there, 2005. The following season, the Centurions went 10-3 and reached the CIF-SS Southern Division semifinals and won the division title in ‘07.

Fountain Valley was 8-12 overall and 2-8 in the Sunset League over Fenton’s first two seasons there. In 2013, the Barons were 7-4 overall and 3-2 in league.
