A Ventura man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after leading officers on a short vehicle pursuit and then attempting to hide in a field.
Around 2:30 p.m., Ventura police received a report of a man passed out in a vehicle near Wells Road and Del Norte Street with drug paraphernalia visible inside, the Ventura Police Department said.
When the first responding officer approached, the driver, identified as 38-year-old Sergio Herrera, suddenly started the engine and drove off.
A second officer arrived on a motorcycle and attempted to stop Herrera but he fled into a nearby neighborhood. Officers lost sight of his vehicle, which led to a search of the area.
The unoccupied car was soon located near Pear Avenue and Mimosa Street, police said.
A police dog was brought to the scene and immediately sniffed out Herrera hiding in tall grass in a nearby field. He was taken into custody without incident.
Herrera was booked at the Ventura County Jail to face possible charges of felony reckless evading and misdemeanor counts of narcotics possession and driving under the influence of narcotics. He also faces potential charges for violating the terms of his post-release supervision.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Ventura Police Department at 805-650-8010.
