Gusty winds, light rain on tap for Southern California’s weekend forecast

After a sunny and warm Friday, there is a dramatic change in the weather on tap for Southern California this weekend.

“The big deal is going to be the wind. We’re going to have strong gusty winds, Saturday into Sunday,” KTLA meteorologist Henry DiCarlo said.

Southwest to northwest winds are expected to be in the 25 to 45 mph range over many mountain, desert, foothill and even some valley locations.

Significant cooling is also expected as a low-pressure system brings a chance of light rain to the region this weekend. Most rain totals should remain under a tenth of an inch, with up to a half-inch possible for the lower elevation mountain communities and foothill locations.

“What have I been saying all week long? The storm is going to be more bark than bite,” Henry said. “Yeah, we’re going to get some rain, but for most of us, very light.”

The showers are expected to develop Saturday night, with most of the rain falling on Sunday. “I think at the end of the day, all of us will at least get some drizzle,” Henry said.

The colder conditions will drop snow levels to around 5,500 feet, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Between two and five inches of snow is possible.

A small chance of rain continues into Monday morning before drier, warmer conditions return next week.
