Bright futures ahead: CSUF starts four days of commencement ceremonies

Cal State Fullerton commencement ceremonies kicked off Monday, with more than 11,000 Titans eligible to receive diplomas.

Some 9,500 undergrads will receive a bachelor’s degree, 1,693 of the graduates are master’s candidates and 99 are doctoral candidates.

Tens of thousands of family members and friends are expected to gather on campus to celebrate at 12 ceremonies planned over four days.

This academic year was Ronald Rochon’s first as president, having come to Fullerton after serving in the same role at Southern Indiana University.

Rochon is expected to address the College of Business and Economics graduates at an 8 a.m. ceremony on Tuesday, May 19, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences graduates at an 8 a.m. ceremony on Wednesday, May 21, and the College of Communications graduates at 8 a.m. on Thursday, May 22.

At Wednesday’s ceremony, an honorary doctorate will be presented to Martha Blanding, a Disney Legends Award recipient — the first park employee to receive the honor — who had a 50-year career with Disneyland after becoming its first full-time Black tour guide and retiring as a senior manager.

Vikki Vargas, a 1981 graduate of the communication school, will receive an honorary doctorate at its graduation on Thursday.

During the academic year, CSUF launched its first undergrad program in urban learning for students who are interested in teaching in elementary and special education classrooms, as well as a minor for students interested in focusing on Southwest Asia and North Africa and a real estate concentration for business administration students.

Graduating Monday evening were the College of Education and the College of Engineering and Computer Science.

Also graduating on Tuesday are the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the College of the Arts; on Wednesday will also be the College of Health and Human Development; and on Thursday, another College of Humanities and Social Sciences will be held.
