Photos: Los Angeles endures days of protests over immigration raids

Monday marks the fourth straight day of public pushback over federal immigration raids in the Los Angeles area, and protests over the weekend turned violent as the National Guard was called in by President Donald Trump, a move that drew the ire of L.A. Mayor Karen Bass and Gov. Gavin Newsom.

ICE agents conducted their first raids in downtown L.A. and the Westlake District on Friday, prompting a large crowd to unsuccessfully prevent people from being detained. The following day, a raid in Paramount drew protesters there and in neighboring Compton before the demonstrations made their way to DTLA

Sunday, however, was a different story, as protesters took to the streets and hurled projectiles – including fireworks and Lime scooters – at law enforcement officers, including Los Angeles Police Department and CHP officers as well as L.A. County Sheriff’s Department deputies; none of those three agencies enforce federal immigration laws.

Protesters were also seen setting cars on fire and looting businesses. As a result of Sunday’s protests, more than 40 people were arrested and nearly a dozen law enforcement officers were injured.

The fourth day of protests was already underway Tuesday morning as a rally was held demanding the release of union leader David Huerta, who was arrested on Friday by ICE agents.

More protesters were seen in the streets of downtown L.A. by 11 a.m.

Just before 11:45 a.m., L.A. Mayor Karen Bass advised demonstrators to protest peacefully and follow in the city’s “proud history of peaceful protest for immigrants’ rights.”

“We must continue that legacy — don’t fall into the Trump administration’s trap,” Bass said on X. “Protest peacefully. Looting and vandalism will not be tolerated.”
