Walt Disney Imagineering is hard at work updating the Buzz Lightyear attractions at Florida’s Magic Kingdom, Disneyland Paris and Tokyo Disneyland in both big and small ways after two decades in operation.
Which raises the obvious question: Will Disneyland’s Buzz ride be next?

Many of the changes coming to the Buzz Lightyear attractions around the world would help improve the game play experience on the Tomorrowland ride at Disneyland.
Disneyland has not announced any changes planned for the Buzz Lightyear ride at the Anaheim theme park.
There was a time when all six Disney theme park resorts around the world had a Buzz Lightyear shoot ‘em up attraction — but not anymore.

The four remaining interactive shooting gallery dark rides all have slightly different names: Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters at Disneyland, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at the Magic Kingdom, Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast at Disneyland Paris and Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue at Shanghai Disneyland.

The Magic Kingdom ride will close on Monday, Aug. 4 and reopen in 2026 after an extended refurbishment.
The Disneyland Paris attraction closed in early July and is set to reopen in late 2025 following a major refurbishment.
The Tokyo Disneyland ride closed in October and will reopen in 2026 as a completely new attraction.

Here are the seven changes coming to Buzz Lightyear rides at Disney parks around the world.

1) New Opening Scene
Imagineering and Pixar are creating a new opening scene on Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at the Magic Kingdom where riders can hone their blaster aim.
A friendly support robot named Buddy will help aspiring Space Rangers prepare for their mission, provide encouragement and conduct a final systems check.

2) Refreshed Ride Vehicles
The Star Cruiser ride vehicles on Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at the Magic Kingdom will get a facelift and new video monitors that will provide real-time scoring updates.

3) Enhanced Blasters
New handheld blasters on Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at the Magic Kingdom will feature always-on laser sights and vibration effects for improved targeting.
Each blaster will have a different colored laser with new sound effects to make targeting easier.
Disneyland Paris will also replace all the blasters on the ride.

4) Interactive Targets
Static targets on Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at the Magic Kingdom will be upgraded with new interactive targets that react and light up when hit.
Disneyland Paris will also replace some targets to improve precision and performance.

5) Lighting and Visual Effects
Lighting will be overhauled on Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast at Disneyland Paris with new spotlights and updated lighting effects.
Technical and visual aspects of the Disneyland Paris attraction will be refurbished.

6) Restored Animatronic Figures
Imagineering will refurbish and restore several Audio-Animatronic figures on Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast at Disneyland Paris.

7) Reimagined Attraction
The Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters ride at Tokyo Disneyland that closed in 2024 will be reimagined as a Wreck-It-Ralph attraction in 2026.
Riders aboard the interactive dark ride set in the candy-themed racing game Sugar Rush will work with Ralph and Vanellope to stop attacking Sugar Bugs created by King Candy.
Hong Kong Disneyland rethemed its Buzz Lightyear ride in 2019 into the Marvel-themed Ant Man and the Wasp attraction.
