At least three pets were killed in a fire at a Long Beach apartment building early Tuesday morning, Aug. 5, officials said.
Firefighters were called to a four-story apartment complex in the 2300 block of East 17th Street around 12:50 a.m., said Capt. Jack Crabtree of the Long Beach Fire Department. Additional units were requested after crews saw smoke and flames coming from balconies on the second, third and fourth floors.
Firefighters were able to knock down the blaze within about 20 minutes. A significant number of animals were rescued from the building, including more than a dozen from a single apartment, Crabtree said.
Eight adults were displaced by the fire. No residents were injured, but at least three pets — two cats and a dog — died.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
