An on-duty Orange County sheriff’s deputy in a patrol SUV struck a man, killing him, while he walked across Chapman Avenue in Orange Wednesday night, Aug. 27, authorities said.
He was not in a crosswalk, they said.
Orange police were called to the 3500 block of East Chapman, near Saddleback Plaza and between Prospect and James streets, just after 10:20 p.m. The man was hit in the middle, westbound lane by the sheriff’s cruiser, police said.
Witnesses told police the pedestrian was attempting to cross southbound when he was hit, police said. The man died at the scene.
“The deputy was not responding to an emergency call at the time of the collision,” Orange police said in a statement.
Video from OC Hawk, a freelance news organization that sometimes works with the Southern California News Group, shows the sheriff’s SUV with damage to the passenger side of the windshield and front quarter panel. The pedestrian ended up on the north sidewalk.
Further information about the man, including his identity, was not immediately released by police.
