Pedestrian killed in Santa Ana, driver arrested

A driver suspected of being under the influence struck and killed a pedestrian Tuesday night, July 29, in Santa Ana, police said.

At around 10:50 p.m., officers responded to reports of a traffic collision near Bristol Street and Segerstrom Avenue, the Santa Ana Police Department said. They found a man, later identified as Santa Ana resident John Valenzuela Luera, 66.

Luera was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Witnesses told police Luera had been walking in the traffic lanes when the vehicle hit him. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, and was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Authorities have not released further details.
