Public invited to vigil to honor fallen Baldwin Park officer

A candlelight vigil will be held Friday evening, June 6, to honor Baldwin Park police Officer Samuel Riveros, who was killed in the line of duty on Saturday night, May 31.

The vigil is scheduled for 7:20 p.m. at the Baldwin Park Police Department’s fountain area, at 14403 E. Pacific Ave., and is open to the public.

Community members are invited to gather in remembrance of Riveros’ life, service, and sacrifice.

“Please come stand with us in remembrance, love and solidarity as we reflect on his life, his service and the impact he had on all of us,” the department said in a statement.

Saturday, Riveros and Officer Anthony Pimentel responded to a report of gunfire in a residential neighborhood when they were immediately shot at, police said. Riveros was struck in the head and killed. The suspect, who was arrested, also shot and injured Pimentel and fatally shot a civilian bystander, Darius Wong, 43, authorities said.

Riveros, 35, had served with the department for nine years. He was a member of the SWAT team and promoted to field-training officer in July 2024, the department said.

The UC Irvine graduate was passionate about snowboarding and a dedicated Los Angeles Dodgers fan, traveling to ballparks across the country to watch them play.
