If you’re taking a walk in the city of Irvine, don’t be surprised if you encounter a little robot on your path.
The city has contracted with Oregon company, Daxbot, to send their robots across the city to look for problems on sidewalks, trails, and access ramps. According to its website, Daxbot develops “people-centric autonomous robots that enhance communities across the U.S.”
The robots are equipped with GPS and sensors and will scan more than 950 miles of public sidewalks and over 70 miles of paved trails across the city. They’re programmed to measure slopes and cracks and also have cameras that work like human eyes with depth perception.
In a news release, city officials say the robots started their duties in the southern section of Irvine in August and will work their way north. The survey will take several weeks and only occur on Mondays through Fridays during the day.
If you want a selfie with one of the cute-looking little robots—they’re programmed for that, too! They’ll happily pose for your photos with heart and smiley faces.
