After 40 years and a million accident-free miles, Glendora’s post office letter carrier retires

After four decades behind the wheel and a million miles driven without crashing, Glendora’s post office letter carrier is calling it quits.

John Bromstead is retiring from the Glendora U.S. Postal Service station with the elite National Safety Council Million-Mile Award – an exclusive club for USPS workers who drove over a million miles without so much as a scratch.

According to a USPS release celebrating Bromstead’s accomplishments and retirement, driving a million miles is comparable to driving from Earth to the moon and back – more than four times.

His secret to success? It’s all in the mindset.

“It’s not just about all the miles, it’s about showing up every day, staying alert, and caring about the people on my route,” said Bromstead.

The new retiree was honored by his the Glendora post office team and enrolled for life in the million-mile award club. Now, he leaves some pretty big shoes to fill.

“This truly remarkable achievement demonstrates how postal employees continue to deliver on the promise of delivering their best every day with care, courtesy and concern for the safety of others,” said USPS District Manager Cipriano Corona.

The Million-Mile Award is presented to drivers who have accumulated one million miles or 30 years of driving without being involved in a single preventable crash.

USPS has one of the world’s largest civilian vehicle fleets: 246,503 vehicles, to be exact.

Those vehicles link over 31,000 post offices across the country and are driven by more than 341,000 letter carriers and truck drivers, according to postal service officials. USPS logs more than 1.2 million miles annually while delivering to 148.6 million residences and 12.8 million businesses across America.
