Conservative commentator joins race for CA governor

A conservative author and commentator is throwing his hat in the ring for next year’s gubernatorial race.

Steve Hilton, author of “Califailure” and a former Fox News contributor, told the outlet that he’s running to “Make California Golden Again.”

Hilton is running as a Republican, despite no members of the GOP winning the governor’s race since Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006, NPR notes.

“I love this state. It’s the best place in the world as far as I’m concerned,” Hilton said. “But after 15 years of one-party rule, this state is barely recognizable. And I honestly think that the 2026 election in California is a life-or-death moment because if we continue with this one-party rule by the Democrats, things are just gonna really start to deteriorate very rapidly.”

Hilton, who was raised in the U.K. and previously served as an advisor to Prime Minister David Cameron, became a U.S. citizen in 2021.

Another Republican, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, is also running for governor.
