Extended period of hot weather headed to Southern California

Southern California is bracing for its first big warmup of the summer as high pressure builds over the region this week.

Temperatures on Monday are expected to remain either below or near normal, but a noticeable warming trend begins on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

“The high is going to take over, and continue to take over, parking itself over the four-corner states … Wednesday and Thursday, you’re going to see two hot ones … taking some areas into the hundreds,” KTLA’s Mark Kriski said Monday.

Temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be 5 to 10 degrees above normal, marking the peak of this week’s heat spell.

Valley and desert locations will see highs between 95 and 105 degrees on those days.

The high pressure will move east by the weekend, allowing for a brief cooldown, “followed by another warming trend early next week,” the NWS reported.

Weather officials reminded the public to take care of vulnerable populations, including newborns, children, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses, during periods of hot weather.
