Loved ones are devastated after four friends were killed when a suspected DUI driver crashed into them on the 605 Freeway in Norwalk.
The crash happened on July 20 around 1 a.m. as they were driving home after enjoying a concert earlier that day.
While on the highway, and for reasons still under investigation, the Nissan crashed into a California Highway Patrol vehicle.
The impact sent the Nissan into another lane and it was disabled by the collision. That’s when an oncoming driver in a Kia sedan slammed into the back of the Nissan at high speeds. The Nissan burst into flames upon impact, fatally trapping the four friends inside, authorities said.
The victims, all 24-year-olds, were identified as Julie Harmori, her boyfriend Armando Del Campo, and their two friends, Jordan Partidge and Sam Skocili. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
Harmori’s aunt, Kathy Stickel, said one of the victims, Partridge, called her mother after the first crash with the CHP car as they were waiting inside the disabled vehicle for help.
“And in the middle of a sentence, the line went dead,” Stickel said.
The Kia driver, Iris Salmeron, 26, of Bellflower, and her passenger, who was unidentified, were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The CHP officer was uninjured.
Salmeron was later arrested and is facing multiple felony charges including driving under the influence.
Loved ones described the four victims as close friends who enjoyed spending time together. Stickel said the victims’ parents have been working to support each other as they grieve the lives lost.
“All the parents are checking on each other,” Stickel said. “They’re also checking on people who they’ve met through this whole tragedy.”
A joint GoFundMe page created by the victims’ families to help with funeral expenses can be found here.
“This was entirely preventable due to the fact that one of the drivers was driving under the influence,” CHP Officer Zachary Salazar said. “Our hearts go out to the families who are involved in terms of the victims…our officers are going to investigate this to the best of their ability.”
