A man died early Monday after being struck by a vehicle while riding a scooter in Long Beach, police said.
The crash occurred at about 3:19 a.m. near the intersection of 7th Street and Federation Drive, where officers responded to reports of an injury traffic collision involving a pedestrian and a vehicle.
When officers arrived, they found an unconscious man lying in the roadway. A bystander and responding officers attempted lifesaving measures until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived and transported the victim to a local hospital. He was later pronounced dead.
According to a preliminary investigation, the man had been riding a scooter southbound outside of a marked crosswalk when he was hit by a 2016 Hyundai Accent. The car, driven by a 28-year-old Laguna Beach resident, was traveling eastbound on 7th Street.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Police said speed, impairment and distracted driving did not appear to be factors.
The name of the victim has not been released, pending notification of next of kin by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office.
The Long Beach Police Department is asking anyone who witnessed the collision to contact Collision Investigation Detail Detective Ashley Van Holland at 562-570-7355.
The case remains under investigation.
