O.C. to combat West Nile concerns with targeted mosquito treatments, including Disneyland resort area

Orange County vector control officials have announced a series of treatments to address an increase in mosquitoes and the growing risk of West Nile virus.

Applications of Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) adulticide are scheduled in the cities of Anaheim, including the Disneyland Resort area, and Garden Grove on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday between midnight and 5 a.m., according to an O.C. Mosquito and Vector Control District (OCMVCD) news release.

“Mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile virus are an indication that the virus is circulating in the community. Anaheim and Garden Grove are historically high-risk areas for West Nile virus activity,” said Director of Scientific and Technical Services Amber Semrow.

Officials said there have been no human cases of West Nile virus reported in Orange County.

The virus is primarily transmitted to humans through mosquitoes, which acquire it from infected birds.

Residents were given the following suggestions to “take charge of your yard” and prevent mosquito bites:

  • Dump and drain any containers filled with water at least once a week
  • Clean and scrub bird baths and pet water bowls weekly
  • Dump water from potted plant saucers
  • Avoid transporting or sharing plant clippings rooted in water
  • Drill holes or puncture containers to eliminate standing water
  • Apply mosquito repellent to exposed skin before going outdoors; reapply as recommended
  • Wear repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus
  • Close all unscreened doors and windows to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home or space; repair broken or damaged screens
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants and opt for lighter-colored clothing
