A police officer shot and killed a man directly in front an elementary school in Anaheim on Monday, prompting a brief lockdown of the campus while children were still in class.
Authorities said the shooting occurred around 12:45 p.m. near the entrance of John Marshall Elementary School at Falmouth Avenue and Holly Street.
Sgt. Matt Sutter with the Anaheim Police Department told KTLA that police initially received a call of a “suspicious person” reportedly armed with a brick and then a shovel.
“We’re not sure what that person was doing with a brick, but when our officer got here there was an encounter, and an officer-involved shooting did occur,” Sutter said.
The officer immediately began rendering first aid to the man, who was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The officer was not hurt, and the name of the suspect hasn’t been released.
Marshall Elementary School was placed on a temporary lockdown, which was lifted after police secured the scene.
