Riverside County authorities continue to probe for leads in 16-year-old’s killing

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office says it is still actively investigating a deadly shooting that took the life of a 16-year-old high school football player earlier this year.

Nathan Vasquez of Menifee was shot and killed on May 9 while attending a house party on the 21000 block of Waite Street in Wildomar.

Vasquez and a friend were both hit by gunfire. That friend survived but Vasquez was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Vasquez was a standout football player and track athlete at Paloma Valley High School. His mother, Allisa Staley, spoke to Menifee 24/7 earlier this year and described her son as being deeply shy yet very popular.

“He was a handsome boy, but he really hated attention. Naythan was someone people wanted to be around. He was funny and caring. And he was a perfectionist. Anything he did, he gave it his all,” Staley told the outlet.

Despite the shooting taking place at a party, no arrests have been made at this time.

On Friday, the Sheriff’s Office issued a news release announcing that the investigation is ongoing and a suspect remains outstanding.

The case is being investigated by the department’s Central Homicide Unit, and anyone with information is urged to contact RCSO Homicide Investigator Gonzalez at 951-955-2777, or Investigator Contreras of the Lake Elsinore Station at 951-245-3300.
