Soaring Labor Day temperatures bring fire concerns to Southern California

There’s no break from the temperatures in Southern California this Labor Day. And with many areas expected to reach triple-digit highs on Monday, fire officials are also concerned about the possibility of wildfires.

A heat advisory has been issued through 6 p.m. Tuesday for parts of Los Angeles County, including Downtown and both the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys.

Daytime temperatures are expected to reach between 96 and 107 degrees with warm conditions continuing overnight, the National Weather Service (NWS) stated.

Heat advisories are also in place for areas of Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties for temperatures exceeding 100 degrees through Tuesday.

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the NWS said.

The scorching heat combined with dry conditions has officials warning residents about the potential for fast-spreading wildfires.

“We’re concerned about the vulnerability and instability of the weather,” said Los Angeles County Fire Department Captain David Dantic. “This could have the potential for dry lightning and thunderstorms, and potential for multiple dry lightning strikes in the areas.”

Dantic said that the recent heat waves have left moisture levels on the local hillsides extremely low and there are concerns that a brush fire could spark nearly anywhere.

“Have a plan and make sure you’re ready to go in the event that it is a wildfire that does occur in your area,” Dantic said.

A cooling trend is possible as we approach the upcoming weekend, forecasters said.
