U.S. citizen detained by federal agents in Pico Rivera is back home

A 20-year-old U.S. citizen detained following a struggle with federal agents that was captured on video in Pico Rivera earlier this month is back home, his attorneys posted on social media.

“Adrian is now safely at home resting with his family!” The Miller Law Group posted on Facebook Sunday. “We are so grateful for our community’s overwhelming support for Adrian. We will have more to say in the coming days and weeks as we continue to pursue justice for the injuries and trauma caused by the federal government’s unlawful actions.”

The post is referring to the June 17 incident in the parking lot of a large retail center in the 8600 block of Washington Boulevard.

Video footage shows federal law enforcement officers in a physical struggle with Martinez, who works at a nearby Walmart. During the confrontation, someone can be heard shouting, “He’s a U.S. citizen!”

Martinez was ultimately detained and placed into a U.S. Customs and Border Protection vehicle. His family later said that Martinez intervened after witnessing ICE agents questioning a man.

“Adrian did nothing wrong, and was standing up for an elderly janitorial worker when he was violently assaulted and abducted by masked federal agents,” The Miller Law Group said following his release.

Martinez was released from federal detention on a $5,000 bond on Friday. His attorneys with the Miller Law Group said no assault charges were filed.

U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, who shared video of the incident on his official government X account, had alleged that Martinez had punched “a border patrol agent in the face after he attempted to impede their immigration operation.”
