Thousands of volunteers gathered at the historic Queen Mary in Long Beach Friday morning to join in an ambitious effort to pack 1 million nutritious meals for local families in need.
The event was spearheaded by U.S. Hunger and Kroger, with hundreds of volunteers coming from local Kroger brand stores, Ralphs and Food 4 Less.
The family-friendly event also saw volunteers prep, pack and move completed boxes to be distributed to local families, including many Angelenos affected by January’s devastating wildfires.
All those who registered ahead of time to volunteer were also given free admission to the Queen Mary before or after their assigned shifts.
Organizers said more than 2,000 volunteers between the local grocery workers and the public participated in the event.
