Waymo expands to new areas of Los Angeles

Driverless taxi company Waymo is slowly expanding its service area in Los Angeles.

On Thursday, the company said it was venturing further into certain neighborhoods, adding service near SoFi Stadium in Inglewood and HHLA shopping center in Westchester as part of its Waymo One service. It previously announced those expansion plans last month.

Waymo launched to the general public in Los Angeles back in November 2024, and currently operates primarily in West L.A., including Beverly Hills, Culver City, Santa Monica and West Hollywood. The most popular destination, Waymo says, is the Grove shopping center in the Fairfax District.

In January, the company confirmed to KTLA that it would be testing the driverless vehicles on L.A. freeways.

Aside from L.A., Waymo currently operates in San Francisco, Phoenix and Austin, Texas. The company said its vehicles will be deployed in Atlanta in the coming weeks for employees only before a full public launch later this year.

Reviews of the service in L.A. have been mostly positive, although some of the autonomous vehicles have fallen victim to vandalism. A man in downtown L.A. unsuccessfully attempted to hijack one earlier this year.

But demand appears to continue to be rising for the driverless service, and the possibility of freeway travel could open up even more of the city for those looking for an alternative to the more established ride-hailing companies or public transportation.
