605 Freeway project will see temporary closures at Katella Avenue ramps

Construction is underway on a rework of the 605 Freeway and Katella Avenue interchange, and overnight closures are already happening.

The project by the Orange County Transportation Authority will adjust existing freeway ramps at the interchange. Lanes on Katella Avenue will be widened and a new bike lane will be added that will connect with existing ones on East Willow Street and Coyote Creek.

The northbound 605 Freeway on and off ramps at Katella Avenue will be remade into a T-intersection. New traffic signals will be installed and new curb ramps will be installed at intersections.

No full closures of Katella Avenue or East Willow Street are planned, but lane reductions during construction will occur, officials have said.

The northbound 605 Freeway on ramp will be closed overnight through Saturday morning along with the inside lanes on Katella Avenue.

The rework will cost $32 million. About $18 million is coming from federal funding and $14 million from the local half-cent sales tax for transportation projects known as Measure M.

Travelers in the area can sign up with OCTA to receive alerts about closures by texting 605Katella to 888-720-7016.
