Captain Mauri’s in San Clemente announces closure after more than 20 years

After opening its doors in 2005, Captain Mauri’s has announced it will bid San Clemente farewell at the end of January.

The restaurant took to social media to break the news, stating, “We would like to thank all of our customers for your continued support and patronage throughout our 20.5 years in business. We have made a bittersweet decision to close Captain Mauri’s. We will miss the great community and will cherish friendships made.”

For more than two decades, the eatery has been a staple of the downtown area. Owner Mauricio Gutierrez purchased the space (formerly known as Captain Culver’s) and transformed it into a family operation.

According to his daughter Janey, who works at the restaurant alongside her sister, the closure comes as Mauricio prepare to retire.

Locals have loved the spot noted for its mix of healthy options, like smoothies and generously sized juices, and heartier fare, like chilaquiles and sandwiches. Beyond the menu, the space itself, replete with is charming Dutch door and vaulted wood-beamed ceilings, added undeniable character to Avenida Del Mar.

No word what on what might replace Captain Mauri’s following its closure. The final day of business will be Saturday, Jan 31.
