Cars ‘N Copters drew huge crowds Sunday following helicopter crash

Thousands of people gathered in a beachfront parking lot Sunday, Oct. 12, in Huntington Beach for an up-close look at exotic cars and helicopters.

Cars ‘N Copters on the Coast, an annual fundraiser for the Huntington Beach Police and Community Foundation, featured some of the fastest and most expensive modes of transportation around, including McLarens, Lamborghinis, Supras and several helicopters.

One of the helicopters that was scheduled to take part in the event crashed Saturday afternoon near a Huntington Beach hotel, sending five people to the hospital. Federal authorities said they’re investigating the cause of the crash, and a preliminary report will be released within 30 days.

The event drew such a large crowd on Sunday that several Surf City residents complained on social media about a lack of security and noise control, as throngs of attendees poured onto the streets and blocked traffic. Some called for increased police presence and more organized planning of such gatherings.

The Huntington Beach Police Department said a majority of attendees acted responsibly, with the notable exception of an “unruly crowd” that gathered on Pacific Coast Highway. Officers issued 11 traffic citations and impounded two vehicles, along with two misdemeanor citations for reckless driving and vandalism, according to a social media post from the police department.
