Chris Reinert resigns as football coach at Servite

Chris Reinert has resigned as the football coach at Servite, the school and Reinert announced Tuesday.

Reinert, 40, coached the Friars for three seasons.

Servite was 20-16 during Reinert’s tenure, including 4-11 in the Trinity League. The Friars qualified for the CIF Southern Section playoffs all three seasons, including an appearance in the CIF-SS Division 2 final in 2023.

“I love Servite High School,” Reinert said Tuesday. “As a student and an athlete at Servite, the relationships and bonds I built I still have to this day, including the best friends I have in the world. But as things go in life, it’s just my time to walk away.

“I feel that professionally and personally I’ve learned the lessons I’ve needed to learn in life and it’s time to move on.”

Servite went 6-5 overall in 2025. The Friars finished fourth in the six-team Trinity League with a 2-3 league record. They lost to Corona Centennial 41-6 in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

Three schools in the Trinity League have now had a change at head coach in their football programs since the end of last season.

Hardy Nickerson, a former NFL linebacker and recently the head coach at Bishop O’Dowd, has replaced Victor Santa Cruz as the coach at JSerra.

Rod Sherman was let go by Orange Lutheran on Monday, with a replacement there still to come.

Reinert talked about the ups and downs of being a football coach in the Trinity League.

“Coaching in this league is both a privilege and a challenge,” he said. “I love the competitiveness of Friday night football and the unique environments that each school in this league brings.

“But on the other side of it, oftentimes the authentic mission of Servie, of forming faith-filled leaders and being accountable, and helping people be their authentic selves, sometimes that runs counter to winning football games. And that’s a tricky balance to overcome.”

Reinert was an assistant coach at Arizona State, Colorado, UCLA and Washington State before returning to Servite before the 2023 season. Reinert, who graduated from Servite in 2004, replaced Troy Thomas as head coach after the 2022 season when Servite went 1-9 overall and 0-5 in the Trinity League.

Reinert, who is married and has two children, ages 2 and 5, said he is beginning to examine potential career opportunities.

Servite said in its statement announcing Reinert’s resignation that the search for its next football head coach begins immediately.
