Disneyland video game launches in Fortnite

A video game version of Disneyland coming to the Fortnite multiverse will let gamers go on a treasure hunt inside the Haunted Mansion, climb to the top of the Matterhorn and battle stormtroopers in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

The new Disneyland Game Rush will launch at 8 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 6 in the Fortnite online multiplayer video game as a tie-in to the Anaheim theme park’s 70th anniversary celebration.

The new Fortnite creative island has been billed as a limited-time experience and marks the first Disney theme park collaboration with Epic Games.

Disney announced a $1.5 billion collaboration in 2024 with Epic Games to create new video games and entertainment universes using Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars characters and stories.

Players will start Disneyland Game Rush in a 70th anniversary celebration hub with an abstract replica of Sleeping Beauty Castle. Iconic Disneyland and Disney California Adventure landmarks will fill the skyline around the video game hub as a soundtrack of familiar theme park music plays in the background.

“”This isn’t going to be a free-for-all battle royale-style game,” according to Laughing Place. “Don’t expect to see Mickey Mouse walking down Main Street U.S.A. throwing shockwave grenades at guests. Disneyland Game Rush will welcome Disney fans into a more family-friendly adventure.”

Players will choose from seven mini-games inspired by Rise of the Resistance, Web Slingers, Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: Breakout, Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, Indiana Jones Adventure and Matterhorn Bobsleds.

The seven Disneyland-themed games will include:

  • Stormtrooper Showdown, where players battle the First Order
  • Tomb Runner race through the Temple of the Forbidden Eye
  • Slip and Climb where players must scale Matterhorn Mountain
  • Haunted Mansion scavenger hunt in a search for hidden secrets
  • Spider-Bot Blasters where players must save the Worldwide Engineering Brigade headquarters
  • Rocket Race that sends players speeding through the Space Mountain cosmos
  • Mission: Sneak Out where players infiltrate the Collector’s Fortress

Completing games and collecting keys will unlock Disney virtual prizes like golden Minnie Mouse hats.

Polygon played an advanced version of Disneyland Game Rush and recommends finding the hidden lightsabers in the Rise of the Resistance game, avoiding the arrows shooting from the walls in the Indy temple and checking every door inside the Haunted Mansion for hidden lore.

“It’s easy to see these ideas converging for a Disney-specific space,” according to the Verge. “One that has ties to Fortnite on a technical and social level, but also one that Disney has complete control over. In essence, a virtual theme park.”

Concept art of the Disney/Fortnite video game interface released in 2024 looked like a theme park with multiple Disney castles at a gleaming central hub surrounded by at least eight islands populated with visual nods to familiar Marvel, Pixar, Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox brands, films and shows.

The theme park-like islands were filled with references to “Wreck It Ralph,” “Monsters Inc.” and “Lilo & Stitch” that sat alongside video game copies of the Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge and Cars Land themed lands at the Disneyland resort.

Other islands were dedicated solely to recreations of Peter Pan’s Neverland and the floating mountains of Avatar’s Pandora.
