Football roundup: Mission Viejo, JSerra, Laguna Beach earn Week 3 wins

Mission Viejo’s football team erupted for 17 points in the fourth quarter Friday to rally past host Lincoln of San Diego 34-24 in a clash of top public school programs in Southern California.

Ranked No. 2 in Orange County and No. 9 in the nation by MaxPreps, Mission Viejo (4-0) trailed 24-17 going into the final period against Lincoln (3-1), the top-ranked team in San Diego.

The Diablos tied the score 24-24 on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Ohio State commit Luke Fahey to wideout Vance Spafford, who returned from an ankle injury in Week 0.

Caleb Sylvia delivered the go-ahead points in the middle of the fourth quarter with a 26-yard field goal.

Running back Davonte Curtis capped the rally with a late 1-yard touchdown run.

Mission Viejo’s defense received multiple tackles for loss from JD Hill and a key interception from Jeron Jones.

In other nonleague games Friday:

JSerra 24, Oak Hills 21: Noah Thayer kicked a 31-yard field goal with 4:31 left in the fourth quarter to lift the visiting Lions (2-2) to their second consecutive victory. Both wins have been on the road.

Wide receiver Clark Cokley had two critical receptions to help set up the game-winning kick.

Earlier in the game, Thayer narrowly missed a 60-yard field goal attempt. The senior booted a school-record 54-yard FG against Damien on Aug. 29.

JSerra opened a 21-7 lead at halftime.

Lions quarterback Gino Wang rushed for two scores, including one after a forced fumble by Dylan Fenn on a sack. Rocco Tompkins also rushed for a touchdown.

Oak Hills (2-2) beat Bishop Amat 38-10 earlier in the season and pushed Rancho Cucamonga in a 14-3 loss.

El Dorado 36, Valencia 0: Darius Selway had two interceptions, including one returned for a TD, as the Golden Hawks (3-1) bounced back from a loss against El Toro to win the Bell game at Valencia (1-2).

Selway returned an interceptions 77 yards for a score to highlight one of five turnovers forced by the El Dorado defense.

El Dorado also received an interception from Alonzo Anguiano and fumble recoveries from Larson and Micah Cavalluzzi.

The Golden Hawks posted their fifth straight win in the rivalry to take a 27-26 lead in the series.

Sunny Hills 49, Canyon 42: The Lancers (3-1) exploded for 23 points in the fourth quarter and made a late defensive stop to rally past the Comanches (2-2) at Buena Park High.

Canyon led 35-26 going into the fourth quarter.

Portola 24, Beckman 21: Ishaan Kedia kicked a 36-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to help lift the Bulldogs (2-2) past the visiting Patriots (1-3).

Timothy Grettenberg added 84 yards and a TD on 20 carries for Portola.

Villa Park 43, Ayala 7: Sophomore Coy Collins rushed for 105 yard and a score on seven carries to lead the visiting Spartans (3-1).

Jake Lawhon and Maverick Declark also rushed for TDs for Villa Park.

Laguna Beach 36, Tesoro 15: Laguna Beach scored 22 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to beat Tesoro.

Jack Hurst threw for 198 yards with three touchdowns for Laguna Beach (3-0). Brady Stringham had 109 yards receiving with three touchdowns. Jack Hooper returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and Laguna Beach had two interceptions.

Vaughn Steinert threw a touchdown pass to Owen Stirrat for Tesoro (2-2).

Dana Hills 41, Long Beach Wilson 7: Carter Anderson completed 20 of 27 passes for 267 yards with four touchdowns for Dana Hills against previously undefeated Wilson.

James Leicester caught eight passes for 85 yards with a touchdown. Trevor Dean, Nicholas Newsom and Ryan Murphy each had touchdown receptions for Dana Hills (4-0). Thompson Foulger ran for 94 yards with two touchdowns and Dana Hills’ defense forced three turnovers.

Capistrano Valley 35, Aliso Niguel 14: Capistrano Valley had four interceptions and a fumble recovery in a road win over Aliso Niguel.

Jack Schwenn had two interceptions for Capo Valley (3-1) and Brady Hassett had an interception. Za’Dyn Hall ran for 105 yards with two touchdowns and Colin Hooper had two receiving touchdowns. Talon Spencer threw three touchdown passes for the Cougars.

Carter Vestermark and Devin Williams had rushing touchdowns for Aliso Niguel (2-1). Tate Fettig had an interception for the Wolverines.

Marina 21, Pacifica 17: Francis Saporito threw a touchdown pass and had two rushing touchdowns for Marina.

Saporito completed 12 of 16 passes for 168 yards and ran for 82 yards. Marina (3-1) had six sacks on defense.

Northwood 38, Woodbridge 7: Dylan D’Epifanio threw for 315 yards with three touchdowns for Northwood in a dominant win over Woodbridge.

Isaac Kwon caught seven passes for 170 yards with two touchdowns. Jack Schultz had 67 yards receiving with a touchdown. Harlem Brown and LJ Ulmer each had a rushing touchdown for Northwood (2-2).

St. Margaret’s 24, Fountain Valley 9: Kai Letcher threw a touchdown pass and ran for a touchdown for St. Margaret’s.

Sammy Grant-Lewis returned an interception for a touchdown. Gavin Taylor had a fumble recovery for the Tartans and Mason Allison made a 38-yard field goal. Sam Ludlum had a touchdown reception in the fourth quarter for St. Margaret’s (3-0).

Nathan Lares had a rushing touchdown for Fountain Valley (1-3) and Jack Chavez made a field goal in the first quarter.

Huntington Beach 19, Redondo Union 17: Brady Edmunds scored the game-winning touchdown on a quarterback sneak with 22 seconds left in the game for Huntington Beach (3-1).

Edmunds threw for 163 yards and Nathan Villanueva ran for 100 yards on 19 carries. Dylan Cunningham had a sack for the Oilers and Maxx Hopkins had an interception.

Calvary Chapel 10, Capistrano Valley Christian 7: Eli Sutherland returned an interception for a touchdown for Calvary Chapel in a defensive battle against Capistrano Valley Christian.

Calvary Chapel (4-0) forced four turnovers and had two sacks. Jett Rauch had an interception and forced a fumble. Waldo Castrejon had an interception and Eliah Flores added a sack and fumble recovery.

Luke Pippen returned an interception for a touchdown for Capo Valley Christian (1-3).

Ocean View 35, Anaheim 13: Dean Northam completed three passes and had three touchdown passes for Ocean View.

Devyn Jenkins, Darrin Hernandez and Chris Vincent each had receiving touchdowns for Ocean View (3-1). Trevor Luapo ran for 118 yards and Dylan Morales added a rushing touchdown. Elijah Stokley returned a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown.

Estancia 14, University 10: Jeff Brown ran for 140 yards with a touchdown for Estancia in a win over University.

Kai Bargas threw a touchdown pass to Juan Silva for Estancia (3-0). Sean Sweeney had an interception for the Eagles and Brady Macphee added a sack with a forced fumble.

Yorba Linda 35, Esperanza 7: Isaiah Trujillo ran for a touchdown and returned an interception for a touchdown in Yorba Linda’s win over Esperanza.

Vaughn Sharp had two rushing touchdowns for Yorba Linda (4-0) and Colin O’Connor threw a touchdown pass to Michael Saucedo.

Buena Park 14, Artesia 0: Jimmy Bautista and Elias Chavez had rushing touchdowns in the second half for Buena Park in a shutout win.

Ivan Corderon had an interception for Buena Park (2-2).

Saddleback 31, Rancho Alamitos 13: Andre Scott threw two touchdown passes for Saddleback in a win over Rancho Alamitos.

Fabian Bravo had a rushing touchdown for Saddleback (3-1). JD Zuniga had a rushing and receiving touchdown. Chris Romery returned an interception for a score.

Century 34, Santiago 20: Derek Carrillo had five touchdowns for Century in a home win over Santiago.

Carrillo ran for 122 yards with two touchdowns and had 114 yards receiving with three touchdowns. Leonardo Mendoza completed 8 of 10 passes for 141 yards with two touchdowns for Century (2-1-1) and Ramon Toribio threw a touchdown pass.

Michael Hoang ran for 173 yards with a touchdown for Santiago (1-3).
