Football roundup: No. 1 Mission Viejo loses; Trabuco Hills tops Brea Olinda

Mission Viejo, ranked No. 1 in Orange County this week, lost to McCallie, 25-14, on Friday in Chatanooga, Tenn.

It was the first loss for Mission Viejo (4-1).

McCallie (4-1) has been a Tennessee state champion the past two seasons.

Mission Viejo quarterback Luke Fahey passed for 136 yards and rushed for a team-high 67 yards. Receiver Luke Karby had four receptions for 44 yards.

McCallie, which compiled 203 rushing yards, had a 10-0 lead at halftime.

Mission Viejo plays at Chaparral in Temecula next week, Friday, Sept. 26.

In other games Friday:

San Juan Hills 38, Mira Costa 28: Stallions senior quarterback Timmy Herr threw three touchdown passes and ran for two touchdowns.

Herr completed 21 of 24 passes for 260 yards. He rushed for 82 yards on 14 carries.

Elijah Ayala rushed for 105 yards on 18 carries and had two receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown for San Juan Hills. Luke Frith had seven receptions for 120 yards and a touchdown.

San Juan Hills, No. 8 in the county rankings, is 4-1. The Stallions take their bye week this coming week. They play their Bravo League opener on Oct. 3 at Corona del Mar.

Trabuco Hills 43, Brea Olinda 36: Freshman quarterback Jackson VerPlancke threw six touchdown passes in his second varsity game as the Mustangs beat Brea Olinda.

VerPlancke completed 23 of 28 passes for 296 yards. He threw touchdown passes to five different receivers.

Joshua Fitch had five receptions for 67 yards and two touchdowns. Landon Pompey had five catches for 50 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 63 yards on 23 carries and scored on a two-point conversion run.

Trabuco Hills, No. 23 in the Orange County Top 25, is 3-1.

The Mustangs play a nonleague home game Friday, Sept. 26, against Corona del Mar.

Brea Olinda is 3-2.

La Habra 35, La Mirada 10: Kevika Martinez rushed for two touchdowns for the Highlanders in their nonleague win over the Matadors.

Blake Rogers and Bryce Vasquez each had a touchdown reception for La Habra. Highlander quarterback DJ Mitchell completed 17 of 24 passes for 220 yards.

Martinez, Mitchell, Rogers and Vasquez are juniors.

La Habra, No. 13 in the county rankings, is 4-1. The Highlanders take their bye week next week. They open Epsilon League play Oct. 2 against El Dorado at Valencia High.

La Mirada is 2-3.

Edison 34, Fountain Valley 7: Edison won the annual Battle for the Bell football game for the 22nd year in a row.

Edison (4-1) is No. 9 in the O.C. rankings.

Fountain Valley is 1-4.

Huntington Beach 48, Mayfair 12: Oilers junior Dylin Bruce scored on a touchdown reception, returned an interception 55 yards for a touchdown and returned a punt 94 yards for a touchdown.

Bruce had five receptions for 76 yards.

Huntington Beach junior quarterback Brady Edmunds passed for 238 yards and three touchdowns Edmunds, who committed to Ohio State, completed 16 of 19 passes. His usual top target Troy Foster had six receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown.

The Oilers are No. 18 in the county rankings. They have their bye week this coming week before playing an Epsilon League game Oct. 3 at home against Laguna Hills.

Western 55, San Dimas 6: Pioneers junior quarterback Chance Thomas threw seven touchdown passes and ran for team’s other touchdown.

His seven touchdown passes set a school single-game record.

Maxwell Young had four touchdown receptions.

Western (4-1), which does not play next week, is No. 19 in the O.C. top 25. The Pioneers open Delta League play on Oct. 3 with a home game against Capistrano Valley.

Aliso Niguel 24, Pacifica 21: Devin Williams ran for a game-winning touchdown for Aliso Niguel in the fourth quarter in a close win over Pacifica (2-3).

Brady Defrain also had a rushing touchdown for Aliso Niguel (3-1) and Carter Vestermark threw a touchdown pass to Hunter Hagins. Parker Comerford and Carson Etnire had interceptions for the Wolverines.

Capistrano Valley 42, Foothill 7: Talon Spencer completed 16 of 21 passes for 208 yards with three touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns for Capistrano Valley.

Jolan Gonzalez had two touchdown receptions for Capo Valley (4-1) and Colin Hooper added one. Freshman Abel Gherasin ran for a team-high 77 yards with a touchdown.

Troy 21, Segerstrom 13: Ethan Mundt ran for 161 yards with three touchdowns for Troy (4-1) in a road win over Segerstrom.

Mundt also had an interception late in the game.

Troy’s defense had three sacks and five tackles for a loss. Ayden Morales had two rushing touchdowns for Segerstrom (3-2).

Garden Grove 35, University 14: Quentin Pacelli ran for 380 yards with three touchdowns for Garden Grove in its first win of the season.

Calvin Keovphan completed 11 of 14 passes for 130 yards with two touchdowns for Garden Grove (1-3). Aaron Payan and Jayden Nunez had touchdown receptions for the Argonauts. Jayden Menier added two sacks and led the team in tackles.

Costa Mesa 54, Century 14: Gavin Garza ran for over 180 yards with three touchdowns for Costa Mesa in a rout of Century.

Andrew Waiss threw two touchdown passes and ran for two touchdowns for Costa Mesa (4-1). Ruben Sanchez and Jack Shayfiyoon had receiving touchdowns.

Matthew Pantaleon had a touchdown run for Century (2-2-1).

Ocean View 25, Santiago 6: Dean Northam completed 10 of 16 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown for Ocean View.

Trevor Luapo ran for 88 yards with a touchdown and Dylan Morales added a rushing touchdown. Chris Vincent led Ocean View (4-1) in receiving with 70 yards and Isaac Young had a touchdown reception.

Capistrano Valley Christian 21, St. Margaret’s 16: Diego Magee returned a fumble for a touchdown just before halftime for Capistrano Valley Christian in a road win over St. Margaret’s.

Drake Bothwell threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Ben Mannion for Capo Valley Christian (2-3) and Luke VIncent had a 41-yard touchdown run. Michael Bukich and Benji Makelela forced a fumble in the final two minutes to seal the win for the Eagles.

Kai Letcher threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Taylor for St. Margaret’s (3-1) and Sam Orellana ran for a touchdown.

Redondo Union 14, Orange 12: Orange rallied back from a 14-0 deficit, but failed to convert a potential game-tying 2-point attempt in the final minute in a loss to Redondo Union.

Star Thomas threw a touchdown pass to Malahki Allen in the final minute for Orange (3-2). Thomas completed 25 of 33 passes for 225 yards and ran for a touchdown. Kingston Hunter led the Panthers in receiving with 74 yards on eight receptions.
