Girls basketball playoffs: Canyon, Rosary, Marina reach CIF-SS semifinals

Canyon’s girls basketball team had a dominant win, 47-22, over Eastside of Lancaster in the quarterfinals of the CIF-SS Division 4 playoffs Wednesday at Eastside High.

Canyon (15-16) entered the playoffs on a three-game losing streak, but has won all three of its playoff games by double-digit margins.

Zulymar Velazquez led Canyon with 17 points and six assists. Kyara Vargas had 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Canyon will host La Cañada in the semifinals on Saturday.

In other games Wednesday:

In the Open Division:

Ontario Christian 84, JSerra 61: Kayla Rice and Vivian Grenald combined for 51 of JSerra’s 61 points in the loss to Ontario Christian in Pool A of the Open Division playoffs.

Rice had 28 points and 11 rebounds for JSerra (19-8). Grenald added 23 points with 12 rebounds.

JSerra went 0-2 in pool play and will play Redondo Union Saturday for a chance to qualify for the CIF State playoffs.

In Division 2:

Rosary 53, Dos Pueblos 33: Rosary led by double-digits from early in the second quarter to the end of the game in a road win over Dos Pueblos.

Isabella Holmes led Rosary with 14 points. Maddison White had 12 points for the Royals and Sophie Lickl added 10.

Rosary (22-9) will host Crescenta Valley in the semifinals Saturday. Crescenta Valley beat San Clemente in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

In Division 3:

St. Margaret’s 50, Canyon of Canyon Country 47: St. Margaret’s advanced to the semifinals for the third time in four seasons by beating Canyon of Canyon Country on the road.

Taylor Francois paced St. Margaret’s with 17 points. Jayden Witten had 15 points and Annika Tufo added 14.

St. Margaret’s (24-7) will play Leuzinger on the road in the semifinals Saturday. The Tartans won a CIF championship in 2023 and reached the championship game in 2024.

In Division 4:

Marina 51, Pasadena Poly 47: Rylee Bradley scored 33 points for Marina in its win over Pasadena Poly at home.

Bradley made 14 of 15 free throws and it was her fifth game with over 30 points this season.

Carleen Nguyen had seven points for Marina and Cheyenne Abrams added six.

Marina (18-13) will play at El Dorado in the semifinals Saturday.

El Dorado 42, Wilson 20: El Dorado routed Wilson of Long Beach on the road. The Golden Hawks held Wilson to a season-low 20 points.

Delaney Shiring paced El Dorado (17-14) with 15 points. Kennedy Wood had 11 points and Riley Morikawa added eight.

In Division 5:

Godinez 48, Torrance 46: Godinez narrowly beat Torrance on the road in its quarterfinal matchup.

Valerie Esteban and Crystal Cruz each scored 13 points for Godinez while Valeria Arcos added nine.

Godinez (16-11) will host Bishop Diego in the semifinals on Saturday. Bishop Diego beat Sunny Hills 47-45 in its quarterfinal game Wednesday.

In Division 7:

Laguna Hills 46, Foothill Tech 33: After two close wins in the early rounds of the playoffs, Laguna Hills got a comfortable 13-point win over Foothill Tech on the road.

Keira McDermott led Laguna Hills (16-10) with 17 points and four steals. Bahena Torres had 15 points with six steals and Cameron McDermott added 12 points with seven assists.

Laguna Hills will play Patriot of Jurupa Valley in the semifinals Saturday.

Kennedy 53, Cajon 20: Ta’Niya Paul filled the stat sheet for Kennedy in a blowout win over Cajon at home.

Paul had 16 points, 15 rebounds and six assists for Kennedy. Jessie Collins had 10 points and Lix Tirona added nine with seven assists.

Kennedy (18-12) hosts Burroughs of Ridgecrest on Saturday in the semifinals
