The James Beard Foundation revealed its “long list” of James Beard Awards semifinalists today, Jan. 21, with only one Orange County name earning recognition.
Viet Nguyen was named a semifinalist for Best Chef: California for Nep Cafe in Fountain Valley.
Nguyen is the founder of several restaurants under Kei Concepts, including Nep Cafe, Vox Kitchen and Qua. He arrived in the United States 22 years ago from Vietnam as a 16-year-old on the college track. After the 2008 financial collapse, he found himself in low-paying IT jobs and taking dishwashing shifts.
“I didn’t really have much money,” recalled Nguyen recalled in a 2025 interview. “I was sleeping on the floor” of a friend’s home or “sleeping in my car. I had a 24-Hour Fitness membership, so I’d go in, take a shower and then go back to work.”
Asked about being named a semifinalist by the foundation on Wednesday, Nguyen said he was “still processing the news,” adding, “I’m very, very surprised.”

Nguyen is the only Orange County-based name listed as a James Beard semifinalist this year; past years have included Daniel Castillo of Heritage Barbecue and Ying Chang and Robert Adamson’s Strong Water Anaheim.
Nguyen is now up for possible finalist consideration, which will be announced on March 31.
Other Southern California names to land on the 2026 semifinalist list include Gilberto Cetina of Holbox (in the category of Outstanding Chef), Niki Nakayama of N/naka (Outstanding Chef), Antico Nuovo in Los Angeles (Outstanding Restaurant), Fátima Juárez of Komal in Los Angeles (Emerging Chef), José Olmedo Carles Rojas of Si! Mon in Venice (Emerging Chef), Ki in Los Angeles (Best New Restaurant) and RVR in Venice (Best New Restaurant), to name a few.
