JSerra, Mater Dei win Regional boys basketball first-round games

A JSerra-Mater Dei boys basketball rematch will happen Thursday in the second round of the CIF Southern California Regional tournament.

Mater Dei (21-15), seeded at No. 16 in the 16-team Division 1 bracket, beat top-seeded La Mirada, 88-79, in the Division I first round Tuesday at La Mirada High.

JSerra (24-13) beat Francis Parker, 60-59, on Tuesday in San Diego in another Division I game. Senior guard Jaden Bailes scored 23 points for JSerra. Bailes made five 3-point baskets. Godschoice Eboigbodin scored 14 points for the Lions.

The rematch Thursday is at JSerra High at 7 p.m.

JSerra has defeated Mater Dei twice this season. The Lions beat the Monarchs during the Trinity League regular season, 67-66, at Mater Dei on a buzzer-beater basket by Bailes. JSerra beat Mater Dei again, 87-66, in the Trinity League Tournament at Hope International University. Eboigbodin scored 46 points in that league tournament game.

Also in Division I:

Crean Lutheran 68, Santa Fe Christian 56: Jacob Majok scored 16 points with 11 rebounds for the host Saints (27-7)

Crean Lutheran plays at Corona Centennial (27-7) in the second round Thursday.

Chadrack Mpoyi and Hunter Caplan scored 14 points each for the Saints. Caplan made four 3-pointers.

In Division III

Trabuco Hills 55, El Camino Real 47: The Mustangs (21-13) will play at Birmingham (19-7) in the second round Tuesday.

La Costa Canyon 72, Aliso Niguel 68: The Wolverines (24-10) were eliminated in the first round at La Costa Canyon.

Wyatt Richmond led Aliso Niguel with 20 points.
