A run from the play-in round to the finals of the Dave Kops Tournament of Champions ended for JSerra’s softball team with a narrow loss Saturday night in Bullhead City, Ariz.
Murrieta Mesa scored with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge JSerra 2-1 at Mohave High.
It was the first defeat for JSerra (10-1).
The Lions won a play-in game Thursday to reach the main, 32-team bracket. They finished 5-1 in the tournament and made the finals for the first time.
JSerra’s Liliana Escobar allowed one earned run in 6 1/3 innings, struck out seven and walked two.
Annabel Raftery had two of the four hits for the Lions.
Freshman Ava Born scored in the first inning for JSerra.
Murrieta Mesa scored once in the sixth and seventh en route to its first tournament title.
