La Quinta football coach James Stewart has resigned and been replaced by offensive coordinator Lucas Alexander, Stewart and Garden Grove Unified School District athletic director Dave Mamelli said Monday.
Stewart said he resigned to spend more time watching his sons’ athletic events. He remains a teacher at La Quinta.
Stewart guided La Quinta the past eight seasons in his second tenure as coach. He also coached the Aztecs from 2003-08.
This past season, La Quinta finished 3-6-1, including 0-5 in the Tango League.
In 2024, the Aztecs went 8-4 and reached the playoffs for the first time since 2017.
Alexander has served as Stewart’s offensive coordinator the past several seasons.
La Quinta will remain in Tango League for 2026 and 2027. The league will expand to nine teams and receive four automatic playoff bids as part of the new alignment of the Orange County Football Conference.
Bolsa Grande of the Tango League recently named Alexis Ramirez as its new coach.
