Community Filmmaking Success: Laguna Woods Video Club’s Annual Goldie Awards

The Laguna Woods Video Club’s 14th annual Goldie Awards celebrated local filmmakers, with members voting for their top three short videos at a February banquet. Golden statuettes honored community talent.

Lucy Parker won first place for her philosophical piece, “About Time – A Senior Meditation.” Tom Nash took second with his humorous “Found Treasures,” and Katharine Holland’s “Two Loves, Five Questions,” an exploration of devotion, earned third.

Ten club members submitted videos under four minutes, judged on content, technical quality, and emotional impact. Club President Jonathan Williams praised the “stars” and emphasized the importance of storytelling. The diverse entries ranged from travelogues and historical pieces to lighthearted and reflective works.

Parker, the club’s webmaster, created her winning video from internet resources, focusing on the theme of time. Holland’s third-place video featured interviews with couples, offering unexpected humor. Nash’s second-place entry humorously showcased recycled items. Other videos covered topics like travel, history, and personal stories.

Attendees cast ballots after the screenings, and winners were announced during dessert. Williams encouraged members to share their stories and utilize the club’s resources. Lab supervisor Jim Rohrs highlighted the lab’s services, including digitizing old media. New member Carol Moore praised the videos’ creativity and inspiration.

Williams reiterated the value of personal narratives, stating, “We all have stories to tell. If it means something to you, it will mean something to somebody else.”
