Mater Dei senior Luke Barnett commits to Kansas basketball

Mater Dei senior basketball guard Luke Barnett announced Friday that he has committed to Kansas.

Barnett (6-4, 180) last season averaged 21 points a game, made 94 3-point baskets in 31 games and was selected to the All-Orange County first team and to the All-CIF Southern Section Division 1 team. He also was All-County first team as a sophomore.

His other finalists were Miami and UNLV.

Barnett credited his coaches and said he enjoyed the recruiting process.

“I’ve been around a lot of great coaches in high school and in AAU,” Barnett said. “It’s been a great couple of years.”

Barnett, who has a 4.4 grade-point average, is the first Mater Dei boys basketball player to commit to the Jayhawks.

“He has earned everything he’s ever gotten,” said Mater Dei coach Gary McKnight. “He works really, really hard. And he’s a very good athlete.”

His father Keith Barnett is the boys basketball coach at Aliso Niguel.
